i’m a laptop studio type guy, and i don’t have an elaborate set-up. i used to record my amp directly into Audacity on my laptop via mic, which strained my computer resources a bit (i.e., recording accompaniment while playing back the existing tracks at the same time). it is so much easier now to record my guitar set-up with the Backtrack and import the files into Audacity for mixing. the Bactrack’s signal is very clean. the software that lets you adjust the gadget’s features is simple to use. as advertised, if you are just looking for something to catch your ideas while you’re brainstorming, it doesn’t get much easier than this, something you can just plug in and turn on and forget about until you’re ready to go back and listen to what you came up with. i’m quite happy with this product. only thing, i wish i had gotten the one with the on-board mic.

one caveat – the first Backtrack i got appeared to work (lights flashed, etc) but would not pick up the signal from my guitar. i returned it and the second one works fine. i hope my experience doesn’t reflect Line 6′s quality control…

This is a totally stripped down piece of equipment with no frills, but it is all I needed to record what I wanted to do and it does a good job.
